Profile of William Crawford on HomeOfHeroes.com

A World War II veteran and Medal of Honor recipient Army Master Sgt. William John Crawford is honored by the Homeless Shelter established in his honor in March 2002. MSG Crawford, who lived in Palmer Lake, was one of only 3,500 people to be awarded the Medal of Honor.
William J. Crawford was recognized for outstanding merit for actions taken above and beyond the call of duty in World War II. Crawford attacked and destroyed two machine gun nests and was taken captive by the Germans. He survived 52 days as a prisoner of war, and was presumed dead by the U.S. Army. His father initially accepted the Medal of Honor, presumably awarded posthumously, on his behalf. Crawford was not personally presented the medal by a U.S. president until 1984.
